The film, 2001, was scientifically accurate for the most part. There were, however, some inaccuracies, which probably made the film more interesting at times. The same is true for 2010, but 2010 appears to have more inaccuracies than accuracies.
For the most part, Kubrick paid great attention to the way that Sunlight would reflect off of the Earth, Moon, and other objects in space. In fact, there is a scene where the Earth looks similar to a crescent Moon. This occurs because of the way that it is facing the Sun.
Kubrick is one of the few filmmakers that recognized the fact that there is no sound in space. All of the scenes in 2001 that take place outside of the spacecrafts have no sound.
