"The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal," the story begins. "They weren't

only equal before God and the law. They were equal in every which way." (Vonnegut

198) In this haunting story, Vonnegut warns our society of a similar kind of equality,

equality that can be fatal for the human race along with the lack of freedom. In "Harrison

Bergeron," Kurt Vonnegut depicts a society in which everyone is mentally, physically,

and socially equal. Throughout the history of our country, Americans have sought

racial, gender, and socio-economic equality. On paper such a society seems ideal.
