Melville begins his novel with Ahab shrouded in mystery. Ahab’s name itself relates to Ahab the king of Israel. “He’s Ahab, boy; and Ahab of old, thou knowest, was a crowned king!” (Melville 77) Just like the wicked disobedient king of Israel was punished Ahab, who disobeys religion, business practices, experience and, ignores omens and please that otherwise would stop a normal man is punished. Religiously Ahab defies god, and acts as his own god letting no other power control him. he fails to follow any standard business practices.
