In Amy Bloom’s Silver Water, the pertinent symbol of mental illness acts as the main connection holding the family together during an unfavorable time. Rose’s onset mental illness puts the family into a situation where they must collectively work together in order for Rose to feel comfortable with therapy. Responding to the call of help, the family pushes through this issue together, involving themselves with Rose’s therapy sessions. By being involved, the family is able to see through this hard time rationally, and the narrator, Rose’s sister Violet, see’s her sisters mental illness as merely a veil covering the beautiful sister she knows on the inside. Through Silver Water, Violet and her mother Galen maintain a healthy and loving relationship between her and her sister while the father, David, has a hard time relating and dealing with Rose’s mental illness.
