Multiple languages in a person’s life can have both positive and negative effects. It can also have many social repercussions. In Amy Tan’s essay, “ Mother Tongue”, she discusses how speaking “different English’s” changed the way she wrote and spoke in different situations throughout her life. Different languages in a person’s life can make a persons life very difficult.
In Tan’s essay, she explains the negative effects of having multiple languages. When she was a child, Tan would have to speak to stock brokers pretending she was her mother. She would have to argue with them about payments and this made her very uncomfortable because she did not know what was going on most of the time.
