Caribou are very interesting animals. Caribou are a North American deer like the reindeer of Eurasia. Caribou range in height from 34 to 55 inches at the shoulders. They can weigh from 130 to 701 lb. Both males and females have antlers, but the female’s antlers are smaller. Two basic groups exist today: the Arctic Caribou and the Woodland Caribou. This report is mostly about Arctic Caribou. They are native to the tundra of northern Canada, Greenland, and Alaska. The Eskimo living in the arctic have depended on these animals for a source of food and clothing.
The caribou breed in September or October, and the calves are usually born in May or June. Arctic Caribou have a gray or light brown summer coat and a white coat in the winter. In winter they come together in large herds and migrate south to warmer climates, sometimes traveling more than 1900...
