"Can a machine know?" This question is much more complex than it appears to be; it has many layers that would take so long to address, and for this reason, this essay will only discuss a minor part of the question.
"Can a machine know?" This question should be simplified by specifying the type of machine, which in this case, will be a modern day computer.
"Can a computer know?" Different people will have different answers depending on what their definitions of what it is to "know" are. There are four different ways of knowing: emotion, reason, language, and sense perception.
