Politics and Economy of Dominicans
Steven Gregory in his book The Devil Behind the Mirror provides an analysis about globalization and how it’s directly affecting the lives and livelihood of Dominicans. This raises the question as to how the economy affects Dominicans. If we draw from Gregory’s book, we can discern that life for the poor is a constant struggle to provide the basic necessities of food, shelter, and clothing, as well as a constant search for employment. If we analyze how globalization has unevenly distributed the resources that are necessary for survival, we begin to understand how much needs to be done for the people of Dominican Republic to live better lives. This paper will focus on how Dominicans’ economy was affected by selling of sugar companies to the foreigners and how Dominicans were struggling to earn a living.
