In Theodore Schick, Junior’s essay, Fate, Freedom and Foreknowledge, he states that we “are free to perform an action only if you can avoid performing it…if we have to do something…we are not free to do it” (page 88). Schick explains that the Oracle’s prophecies suggest that no one, whether they are in the Matrix or the real world, has freedom, that their lives are left up to fate (page 88). Fate has everything to do with whether one is free, for if one’s life is in the hands of fate, then nothing is left for chance and everything that happens to us is destined to happen. Schick has a very truthful interpretation of The Matrix because if someone wants to have the ability to know what will happen, then that ability has to come at a price. The price of foreknowledge is freedom (page 93).
