I think that ‘Garden State’ is an art film because that for me I can relate to a lot of things that are going on in the film. Moving away from home then going home to find your friends doing the same old things. Probably more when it comes to drugs and alcohol. It is also a more believable love story for people in their twenties. I think it makes it easier to understand and feel what the film is trying to get the viewer to feel.
I think the film does a good job of juggling comedic moments with the film’s pathos. Like I mentioned before people in my age group can understand the comedy and the emotional scenes in the film. For example the scene in the morning when he wakes up and has things written all over him is something my friends do all the time, I personally think that is very funny.
I think the scene at the end of the film does work although...
