Global Ethical Standards
In the modern world money equals power and this effectively means that there has been a power shift from the governments of nation-states to the boards of big business. In order to attract and retain business, many governments are prepared to compromise on ethical issues such as human rights abuses, environmental pollution, tax evasion, etc. The onus therefore rests on business itself to implement and maintain ethical standards and since they are operating on a global scale, these standards should by rights be global in nature as well.
The question, though, is why they should place any emphasis on ethics at all. The simple answer is because it makes good business sense. Business by its very nature cannot operate in isolation and the interests and values of various stakeholders who are also operating across borders must be taken into consideration...
