Throughout the play, Hamlet manages to act insane and still remain completely lucid.
Hamlet only acts mad in front of certain characters, to make them believe he is indeed crazy. In Act II, before Polonius enters he says, “I am but mad north-north-west. When the wind is southerly, I know a hawk from a handsaw.”(Act II sc. 2 ln ) This is clearly an example of his fake madness because he is showing us that he only acts insane when he thinks it is convenient but he knows he really isn’t.
The king starts to wonder what is going on with Hamlet because he has been behaving different lately, which proves that the characters are accrediting his madness.
