The main theme in the play "The Occupation of Heather Rose" by Wendy Lill is the conscious, or subconscious racism and prejudices that are present in all people. There are four different aspects of racism that are most prevalent in the play; these include the subconscious racism that Heather Rose feels toward the Inuit community, the most obvious racism that many of the other white characters harbor, and the racism that the majority of the members of the Inuit community feel toward Heather and the other white characters, and lastly the way that Heather writes off most of the white members of the community as "white trash". The fact that this play is a one woman means that any prejudice expressed is in the mind of Heather. The racism that I will focus on is that of Heather toward the native community.
