Austen starts off the book with a satirical quote about marriage: “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife” (Austen 1). The concept of marriage in England back in the 19th Century was not very closely associated with love; there are many other reasons in which a couple would elope. Those reasons include lust, for means of economic stability, beauty and in some cases love, which is usually the most important. Throughout the novel Austen points out that love is the only reason to truly be happy with the person that you choose to marry.
