After the French and Indian War, the British wanted to make some of their money back after helping defend the American colonists. To raise this money they instituted several acts starting with the Royal Proclamation of 1763, which limited the amount of land the colonists could have, and ending with the seemingly outrageous taxation of the Tea Act in 1773. The Tea Act was the last straw in the minds of the colonists and they retaliated by throwing the cargo of the British ships overboard. After this event, which is now know as the Boston Tea Party, tensions quickly moved towards war as the British demanded compensation for the tea that was dumped into the sea by the rebellious colonists.
