David McCullough did an excellent job of portraying the revolutionary war in 1776.Not just on the American side, but the British as well. David McCullough shows in the book the advantages and its disadvantages of the American and British Army. Seeing the views and points of the people themselves what they were going through, and how it affected them. McCullough shows us the views of General George Washington and how he had to go up against the world’s best army and navy, and all he had was a bunch of young or old men.
We see Parliament in the beginning pages of the book with King George discussing the problems in the colonies. Wondering what could be done and how the problems with these boycotting colonists could be resolved. McCullough shows in this meeting of Parliament with the King many views of what should be done. John Wilkes, Lord Mayor of London saw that the war was necessary to protect Great Britain. “But could anyone doubt the strength of Great Britain to “reduce†them? And this, he said, must be done quickly and decisively, as an act of humanity†(McCullough pg. 15). McCullough shows the view of Lord North he wanted to get the colonist to be under the British rule, but he wanted to avoid war as much as possible. “The intention now, he affirmed, was to send a powerful sea and land force across the Atlantic. But with these forces would also go “offers of mercy upon a proper submission†(McCullough pg. 18).
General George Washington probably the key to our country’s revolution. McCullough shows the trouble the work he had to go through to even develop an army to even go up against the world most powerful army. There were many outlooks on the war from the colonist believed it was well worth fighting for, but a really tough battle. All the boycotting all the trouble the colonist went through such devotion, McCullough shows, how much trouble they went through to show some change.
