The book starts in the year 1984 and is set in Airstrip One, now better known as England. Airstrip is a mainland of a country, Oceana and consists of North America, South Africa and Australia. The country is then divided into three parts; The Inner Party, The Outer Party and The Proles which are the commoners and the workers. The book presents an imaginary future where a totalitarian state controls everything, even people’s thoughts. Big Brother, the ruler of the party is the leader and dictator in this book.
As the novel opens, Winston Smith the protagonist feels mad? At the oppression and rigid control the Party has over him/everyone. Winston tries to rebel, by keeping a diary in which to reveal all his “improper” thoughts. Through this diary, he is committing thoughtcrime He later on meets and befriends Mr.Charrington, a prole, who “shares” his interest and dislike of big brother. Winston believes that O’Brien is a secret member of the Brotherhood; a group working to overthrow the Party.
Winston works in the Ministry of truth, where he alters historical records to fit the needs of the party. And it is here that he meets Julia, believing at first that she was an informant who was going to turn him in for keeping a diary but, later on he received a note from her reading “I love you” and they began a love affair. They rent a room and were always on the lookout for Party monitoring. Their relationship last quite a while and as it progresses, Winston’s hatred for the party grows stronger.
Winston, waiting for this all along, receives message from O’Brien, a member of the inner party that he wished to see him and Julia. O’Brien reveals his hatred for Big Brother and enlists them into the brotherhood. He gives them “The Book” which contains all the truths about big brother. Julia and Winston return to their room above the junk shop to read the book just to finally get caught by the Though Police; Mr. Charrington...
