SOC 110 Individual Week 1: 21st Century Reflection Paper.
In working with teams, I have had the following experiences: being able to rely on other people to assist others with work and expertise when they need it most, either to complete a deadline or to solve problem. I have also had experiences with not-so-helpful teams, such as some of the learning teams through my five years at University of Phoenix. I have dealt with lazy people, people dropping classes, people on learning teams who just wanted a grade without doing the work, people who would rather rant and rave about other people’s work rather than to be constructive and helpful in completing a task, etc... None of these experiences have been positive but they have been learning experiences. I know that you cannot always count on teammates to do what is asked of them; however, I also know that in a work environment if such a person is on your team, you can report their unwillingness to assist and in a hierarchy, the indiscretions will be addressed. The University of Phoenix an unhelpful classmate’s presence on a class roster leaves them part of the team, even if they are not helping in being a team with indiscretions affecting every other teammate’s grade.
I work for Michigan State University in a department called Academic Information Services, or AIS. The majority of the department role for the university is developing applications for student loans, grades, admissions, Human Resources, Financial Aid, almost every application the university uses for day-to-day business. The department is very team-orientated. Each project of AIS is handled by teams with a team lead.
