A Room With A View

“Change leads to greater understanding of one’s self and others”

Discuss this statement with reference to your prescribed text and two other texts of your own choosing.

Change is to make different ones opinions or intentions, it is necessary process in our lives.   The aspect of change is present in A Room With A View by E.M Forster, he explores change and the understanding of oneself and others through Lucy Honeychurch. Whilst changing from childhood to womanhood she begins to understand her society and the people they marginalise. Lucy reaches self actualisation on her journey and becomes a greater person as a result. Similarly to this idea of change is Sky High by Hannah Robert, the persona uses flashbacks to illustrate to the audience her story of change and how she has matured from a young carefree child to the hard life of a grown woman. The persona whilst reflecting on her life begins to understand herself and achieves self awareness. The third text that shows the transformation of one’s maturity and their journey to self understanding is Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre directed by Franco Zeffirelli. Jane Eyre changes as she is moved throughout her life most significantly when she is in the presence of Mr Rochester, it is here she finds a balance between reason and passion a result of understanding herself and those surrounding her. These texts all explore the progression of maturation and the moment of self realisation.

In part one A Room With A View Lucy is exploring her possible change from the restricting British conventions. Upon her arrival to Italy Lucy’s values are that of a typical English lady, polite, a sense of propriety and class. Part one sees Lucy introduced to the Emersons, Mr Emerson is at first labelled as rude as he and his son do not adhere to the social expectations of the era.
