A World Apart
The inside of a prison is not a place most of us would like to be. Think of how you would feel to know that everyday your life is going to be controlled by someone else and you have no say in how or what happens. The United States prison system has improved over the last several decades, but there are some countries that prison is an awful disgusting place to be and you may rather die than have to be there. One of these countries is South Africa, the prison are beyond inhumane and badly ran and unhealthy in most cases. South Africa and the United States prison systems have many differences, everything from the management, view points, institution types and prison life. This paper will discuss the different aspects of each system and how they compare and differ. The United States prison system maybe in need of some improvements, but South Africa is in need of much more than one could imagine.
South Africa’s prison system is operated by a department of South Africa’s government known as The Department of Correctional Services. South Africa like the United States has different types of institutions, but unlike the U. S. all of them are run by the government powers only. South Africa has women prisons, youth prisons, men only prisons, and also men and women facilities. There are around 240 prisons in South Africa, most of which house male prisoners (Department of Correctional Services (South Africa). They also have different types of security level prisons in South Africa as they do in the U. S., minimum, medium and maximum security level prisons are all part of the system in South Africa.

Overcrowding is a great concern in South Africa as it is here in the United States.
