Being an advocate for the ALBANY COUNTY SAFE PROJECT, an organization against domestic violence and sexual assault, I have seen victims of rape in its different forms; date rape, is just one of them.   Any man or woman convicted of these types of crimes has to be liable for his or her own actions.

      “Rape is, any act of sexual intercourse forced upon a person.   Statutory rape is sexual intercourse with a girl or boy, under the age of consent, and the age of consent varies by state (Dictionary.com).”   There is also stranger rape, gang rape and marital rape.   Some forms such as marital rape are very difficult to prove.   Some men believe you cannot rape your wife because you are married and sex is a legitimate right.   Date rape is also difficult to prove, because the victim usually knows the perpetrator and goes somewhere willingly with him or her.

      Rape is a controversial crime and society has different views on the topic, and the severity of the punishment, deserved.   In cases of child abuse and child sexual assault, there is not much disagreement or hesitation in what ought to be done to the predator.   Except when it comes to children, many feel that the victim is to blame   Some say the female’s behavior, the way she dressed, mixed signals were sent, or saying NO after things had already gotten hot and heavy, is what caused the rape.
      “Date rape is an issue of importance and concern to college-age women.   So many are on their own, away from home and their parents for the first time.   Being in an unsupervised environment where drinking and partying are encouraged, tends to promote sexual aggression and discourage inhibition.   Drunken young men, who rape women at parties, can always claim they did not know what they were doing.   The sad thing, victim blaming, will more than likely take place.”   (Jacoby, S.1991).
