The perspective of Ace Corporation is to be a retail support company. They provide its dealer-owners with their services at the most reasonable front end cost. They have established a strong board of directors, that is built from 11 dealer-owners and one dealer who is not affiliated with Ace. They are the group who has established the guidelines for the staff of Ace.
Ace is the second largest dealer-owned cooperative in the United States. Ace Hardware has 5,100 local hardware, home center, and lumber stores located in every state in America, and in 65 foreign countries and territories. Ace has a main emphasis on service and modern retailing techniques. This has helped locally owned Ace stores to deal with competition that is extremely intense. Some examples of their competition is Home Depot and Builders Square.
In between 1920-1970, Ace’s years were spent as a wholesale purchasing cooperative. It was stated in the early 1920’s by five gentlemen. Their names are Richard Hess, Frank Burke, Oscar Fisher, E. Gunnard Linquist, and William Stauber. These men joined to form a purchasing and advertising partnership among their Chicago-area hardware stores. They combined to increase their ability to purchase merchandise from wholesalers. They adopted the name of Ace in 1927.
In the next two years the company had evolved into a wholesale organization, purchasing directly from manufactures and store merchandise in warehouses in the Chicago area. This was a major strength for them because it was another way for them to save costs. This allows for the company to offer lower process, and overpower the competition.
Burke was the first president of Ace, but only held this position for a short period of time. He was succeeded by Richard Hesse in 1920. Hess served in this position for over 40 years. He held this position until 1973.
