Adam’s Canyon
Hiking is a favorite past time for many people in Utah, as well as in other states. We don’t really discuss hiking much, some people do it for fun and some do it for exercise. So what makes for a good hike? Some may think the scenery and some may say the difficulty of the trail.
As I was driving up highway 89 to get to Adam’s canyon I could feel the excitement radiating off my face. As I turned onto the suburban street lined with red brick houses I wondered, “Could there really be a hiking trail on this same street?”   As I heard the clunk of loose gravel hitting my car I knew I was in the right place.
The parking lot is nothing special; it’s surrounded by dirt and a few extremely large boulders. The boulders are pretty hard for me to see in some areas and I’m sure there would’ve been some deadly consequences for my tires if I were to hit one. There are about ten cars waiting for their owners to return from the trail. Ten seems like a pretty big number for a Wednesday night, but there always seems to be a large number waiting in the deserted parking lot. As I got out of my car I glanced around at the scenery surrounding the lot. To the South beyond a small pond is a small neighborhood of larger new houses with amazing landscaping and huge backyards. To the West you can spot highway 89 and the many cars speeding by (going much over the 55 mph speed limit.) Regardless of the surrounding area the parking lot is a circle of dirt in which the nearest house seems miles away.
As I make my way over to the beginning of the trail I see a sign that reads, “BEWARE OF RATTLESNAKES!” I was apprehensive as I passed the sign and continued onto the trail. The trail is very distinct and worn down by footprints and there are no remains of grass where people have walked. Once I hike up a little hill the trail turns into back and forth switchback of sand. It doesn’t seem too difficult at first but the sand begins to stick to my shoes and pulls...
