Advertising may not seem like a crucial fixation to posses and employ in our world today; but essentially, advertising changes and develops our society that we are living in, in countless ways. Marketers like to advertise anything that we use as a daily vital and everything else, from clothes to kitchen appliances. Not only do they advertise towards a certain age group but, they advertise towards the different lifestyles of people from their religion to the type of music they listen to. “Advertising is primarily designed to sell a product, but advertisements do more than simply market a product, they also market a lifestyle.” (Wilkinson) So in reality, advertising influence our society in many different and knowledgeable ways.
Marketers are basically trend setters; they like to set trends for a certain group of people that they think and almost certainly know will follow. If a certain group of people; such as celebrities or the popular kids in high school, are wearing a certain trend then everybody else will. “Advertisers want the audience to equate their product with success, so that they come to believe if they have that particular product they, too, will be regarded as successful.” (Wilkinson) The items people wear or would like to wear right now in the present and also back then in the past and surely in the future are based on what people who are successful and popular in their time. For example, almost everyone would think cardigans are light sweaters made for grandpas and grandmas but once someone famous, such as Kanye West, wears a cardigan; all the young people and the in fashion people wants a cardigan. Marketers use this persuasive and manipulative idea in many ways. First of all they would overprice the in fad item; cardigans used to be below $15.00 and now they can be found for $50.00 plus by a famous named brand that people would buy just to have its small logo on the item. “Humans are obviously simplistic creatures if they can be...
