Like many major metropolitan areas in the country Kansas has water and air problems. This is something that affects many major cities across the United States. It would be nice if there where an easy solution to take care of all the problems this city faces. Sadly it is not that easy. When you have a large population of people to take in account even the best plans have problems.
Like not having enough water having too much water can also be a major problem. Backflow is a major cause of contamination in water systems. Backflow according to Kerri (1996) is (A reverse flow condition, created by a difference in water pressures, which cause water to flow back into the distribution pipes of a potable water supply from any source other than an intended source).
Backflow is a very serious problem that affects many large cities. Another major problem that Kansas is having is cross connecting. Kerri (1996) states that (Cross connections in a system are potentially very hazardous, cross connections are made by contractors, landscape workers, and municipal employees. Often the major indicator is the presence of pesticides, gasoline, or taste and odor problems in water).
Along with poor drainage and outdated sewer systems backflow and cross connecting are the major water problems with Kansas. Updating the sewer systems should be a major priority of the city. This can kill two birds with one stone. You will cut out your back flow problems with an up-to-date sewage collection system. Kansas needs to do away with the combined drainage system. According to Kerri (1996) (Combined drainage systems often lead to longer run times for wastewater treatment techniques).
By cutting out storm water in your wastewater supply you will be able to cut out chemical usage and power usage at your wastewater plants. This will intern save the city money in the long run.
