The Importance of Embracing Our Past
Discrimination has come far from the Civil Rights Era, where it used to be “White Only” signs, to where now everyone is allowed in.   Yet the current generation as a whole does not comprehend some of the different things that we’re fought for. During that era they fought for equal rights, but at the same time to get they had to give. Although, most of the time they are thought to be the same, integration and desegregation are from the same. It is very critical to know the difference between the two. Desegregation is the policy or practice of ending the separation of people from different races, classes, or ethnic groups, as in schools, housing, and public or commercial facilities, especially as a form of discrimination. By that definition desegregation is just merely putting aside beliefs and acting as if everyone is the same color. It is putting your thoughts to rest and “being as one” for the betterment of your race and/or culture. Desegregation was the first step in trying to put discrimination to rest. For this is where we learn that equality is everything, and every person has the right to be treated the same.  
While in Jackson, Mississippi attending Jackson State University I learned about two historically moments that would shape the nation forever. In 1970 after a year long of pedestrians getting hit by cars driving through the campus, a tirade broke out 2 weeks after the students on the Jackson State campus started protested the troops in Cambodia when it was rumored that the brother of Civil Rights Activist Medgar Evers had been killed. This started a riot throughout the campus. Students started throwing rocks at cars after being upset about the deaths, and the hit & runs. This caused the state of Mississippi to bring out more than 75 Jackson policemen and national guard to the school, where they forcefully shot more than 700 shots into the west side of the Alexander Dormitory, killing two students and...
