Leading up to the 20th century, women weren’t afforded the opportunity to fashion careers in male dominated fields or follow their own moral judgments, regardless of propriety and tradition. The biggest aspiration a women felt she could have was getting married and raising a nice family. So while many women were sticking to that path, women like Amelia Earhart and Isadora Duncan had other ideas. They defied convention to follow their dreams, embodying the rebelliousness, restlessness and thirst for freedom of a true pioneer.
According to the Greeks, when chaos got out of hand, the Gods would step in to right the world again. These women, in a sense caused chaos by disrupting the natural order of the world, shattering any preconceived notions of a woman's niche consisting of only housewife and mother. Isadora Duncan, creator of modern dance, inspired women to not only loosen their clothing, but their morals as well. She advocated for open relationships and homosexuality and the importance of following your own beliefs despite what society deemed as correct. These progressive ideals were completely opposite of the structured victorian ideals society was accustomed to and many were outraged. Another chaos igniting women was Amelia Earhart, celebrated aviatrix and first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. A tremendous female rights advocate, she encouraged women to take on challenges previously only afforded to men and follow their dreams tirelessly even if they were met with resistance. Although many women viewed these two as role models, many others perceived their actions as detrimental to wholesome values and virtue and would ultimately be done in by their disruptive actions.
Around the time of their demise, it was often said these women were “impaled upon their own swords” for going against norms in their attempts to forge identities for themselves outside of the home. Isadora Duncan, known for big, flowy outfits, was horrifically strangled to death...
