American Civic Values
American National Government/POS/110
1. What about today's society reinforces American civic values?
America is based on individual freedoms, liberties, and morals. Elected government officials are put in office to support these civic values based on society’s wishes however civic values are often individually and community based niceties or general considerations for other people. Americas deeply seeded values act as reinforcement of American civic values.
2. What about today's society undermines American civic values?
There are many things that undermine American civic values. It is often considered that large corporations and very wealthy people influence the government and the decision making process because their large financial contributions help to elect candidates that support their interest. Also, the media is responsible for focusing on negative issues such as unemployment and crime thus intensifying already apparent problems. These issues breath negativity into American culture and as it spreads so does the lack of American civic values.
3. How do civic values help make America's political and civil culture better?
Civic values allow a set of apparent guild lines for Americans to follow to allow each person or group of people their own liberties both individual and government mandated. These values keep communities peaceful and considerate of its members.
4. Are there penalties for failing to adhere to civic values? Can you give an example?
There are criminal charges for breaking some laws such as using privileged knowledge for personal benefit. However, there are many instances of not adhering to civic values that simply come with regret, guilt, a disappointed neighbor, or even becoming a community out cast such as not helping an elderly woman with medical bills, or not providing education for a mentally challenged child.
