Americans And Technology: The Obsession

Americans have a lot of problems. We eat too much, spend too much money, and watch far too much television. We also develop this need to have the latest and best thing available to us. Everyone is a victim of it, starting at a very young age. A soon as kids start attending school, they are subject to it. They realize that everyone wants to have the coolest clothing, crayons, cell phones, and much more. Once children realize this, it is a constant battle that they will fight for the duration of their lives. Americans have a serious problem when it comes to needing to own the latest technology.
Children learn mostly by watching their parents. If they see their parents absorbed with having the best things, then they will be as well. Parents can become obsessed with the need to have better things that their neighbors or friends. We need to have all of the new technology; it is like some sort of necessary basic desire. Most children start using the internet between the ages of five and ten, while most receive cell phones between eight and ten. Children cannot remember a time when cell phones did not exist. Most are also creating their own social networking pages by the age of thirteen. Students are even starting to use text abbreviations in the English papers. Things such as LOL and  should not be allowed in a formal English essay. The internet is also making writing papers much easier. Many students just copy and paste things straight from the internet, many times without citing or even reading it completely.
Video games are a huge problem for obsession. There have been cases around the world of people playing video games for too long and actually dying. These cases are extreme and involve playing the game for days at a time with no breaks, but they still happen. Other people have killed people and blamed it on a video game.
