Authors use many different themes and writing styles when writing literature. The theme is the underlying idea of a literary work, advanced through the concrete elements of character, action, and setting; while the writing style is the way an author expresses his or her matter (Abcarian & Klotz, 2007). In this essay we will compare and contrast the themes and writing styles of two works of literature: A Clean, Well-Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway, and The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros.
There are many similarities between these two stories involving their themes and writing styles. For example, both stories seem to have an underlying sadness in their themes. Neither of the stories blatantly states the reason for their sadness; it is, however, implied in their words and thoughts. The writing styles of these two stories are very different; however, the styles of both stories show us the sadness and loneliness of the main character.
Despite the similarities of the stories, there are even more differences between the two. The style of A Clean, Well-Lighted Place is much more fast-paced and harder to follow then that of The House on Mango Street. Hemmingway used a short sentenced dialogue throughout most of his story, while Cisneros used a more descriptive and imaginative script for her story. Another major difference between the two stories is that Hemmingway’s story is told from a third-person point of view while Cisneros’ story is told from a first-person point of view.
In conclusion, we have discussed two different stories from two very different authors yet when comparing and contrasting we were able to find similarities as well as the obvious differences. These similarities can be found when you take the time and use your critical reading skills when reading and analyzing a story. Sometimes you must read between the lines in order to catch various themes and styles, but they can always be found.
