Analyzing My Ethics Awareness Inventory
After reviewing my Ethics Awareness Inventory (EAI) results, it was interesting to note that I was not as even keeled as I had thought. Apparently my ethical perspective is primarily Obligation based, followed by Character. I am sure that my years in the Navy brought these values to the forefront of my ethical perspective arsenal, while my educational experience has done little in that regard.
The EAI stated that my results were aligned with Immanuel Kant’s philosophy. Essentially that there should be a centrality of fairness, meaning that there cannot be one rule for me and another for others. He was also “known for his theory that there is a single moral obligation . . . (or) ‘Categorical Imperative’ . . . derived from the concept of duty.†(Immanuel Kant, 2008)
Having been raised to always do what is considered to be morally right; I feel that others should behave similarly. A person’s intent speaks volumes regarding what happens or has happened. I state this because I believe that everyone consciously chooses how they act as well as which rules they are willing to follow. Because of my beliefs, I tend to cause some friction when certain topics come up and others treat them as acceptable, while they should know (in my opinion) that they are ethically and even morally wrong. My beliefs can and probably will cause some issues for me at some point in time, but I am who I am.
