The Minoans were a bronze age culture that developed on the island of Crete before the Greeks
had overtaken it. Though the Minoans were certainly influenced by their powerful Greek
neighbors, their artistic style was definatley unique to their civilization. Among artifacts excavated
from ancient Minoan palace’s, images of minotaurs , as well as depictions of double sided axes
were found in abundance. The double sided ax was a symbol that was assosiated with a god
refered to by the Greeks as Rhea. The Minoans were fine metal workers, and bronze was a favorite
material used in the production of sculptures. The Minoan civilization also developed two forms
of written language, linear A and linear B, however neither has ever been deciphered.
