Race and My Community

Growing up in the south, I was introduced to racial inequalities at an early age. However, over the years I have seen an enormous change in the way black people or other minority groups are treated. Racial influence does not play a big part in my community. We all pretty much stick together and try to run our town as smoothly as possible. In my community, the media, county and city officials all work closely together to ensure the best quality of living for everyone, be they black, white or in between, we are all treated as equals.
I have lived in my community for the past ten years, and although there are some racial or prejudice issues at times, I can not recall a time when race played a big part of any uprising. In my community the racial balance between black and white is pretty much even. There are no more Black people than there are White people, however, there are very few Arabic and Latino's. When I look around my city I see a variety of types of people, however, I can not say that any of them look like me per say. Of course there are many Black people in my community, but if I said that we look like each other, just because we are black, would be a form of stereotyping. I can say that my immediate family looks like me, but not because we are all black, but because we are blood related. I myself have a variety of races that are a part of my family, although we may not be blood related they all play a large role in everyday family life. We all get together as a family, and there have never been any altercations involving them or their race. They are Family, and family is family to us, no matter what color they may be.
When I think about the people in my community, and the way they treat people of color, I can not say that there is any difference in the way we are treated as to the way that the white people are treated, however, there is a...
