Animal Cruelty


THESIS STATEMENT: In today’s society, cruelty towards animals is a growing epidemic because people do not value this worth of an animal’s life.

I.   Animal cruelty is a growing social issue that many people do not understand.
A. Each type of abuse has displayed certain patterns of behavior that we can use to help understand more about why people commit the crimes they do today.


B. Animal cruelty is often broken down into two main categories:   active and passive.
1.   Active cruelty implies malicious intent, where a person has deliberately and intentionally caused harm to an animal.
2. Active cruelty is sometimes referred to as NAI (Non-Accidental Injury)
3.Passive cruelty is typified by cases of neglect, where the crime is a lack of action rather than the action itself

II. The suffering and killing of animals is often viewed as a sport or scientific research in different parts of the world.

A.   In Canada, the mass murder of thousands of seals takes place every year.
1.Canada's annual commercial seal hunt is the largest commercial hunt of marine mammals on the planet.
2.Sealing is an off-season activity conducted by fishermen from Canada's East Coast.
3. Hundred of thousands of baby seals are clubbed each year.
4. Seals are mostly killed, using clubs or guns, for their fur, which is used for fashion garments.

B. In Japan, researchers hunt and kill different species of whales for research and to create products for sales.
1. To kill the whales, hunters use harpoon grenades that shoot a hole into the whale’s body and then explodes on impact.(inhumane)
2. People are trying to stop whale hunting because it causes an inhumane amount of pain to the animal and also leading many species to the brink of extinction.
3.Japan has asserted a cultural right to continue whale hunting because
whale meat is a traditional part of the Japanese diet.
