Theme 2
Pigs could read and write perfectly.(Orwell,32) The pigs were able to manipulate the other animals into doing what was needed for the pigs to gain power. Napoleon and Snowball created the 7 Commandments through and principles of Animalism. The 7 Commandments would form a law by which all animals on Animal Farm must live by forever after. (Orwell,24)
Squealer was often used to spread news to the farm animals. Squealer was very good words and used his words to instill fear into the other farm animal.
For Example: On page 55, Squealer discusses the leadership of Napoleon and the loyalty of the animals on the farm. Squealer insisted that “Discipline†was necessary if the animals did not want Mr. Jones to come back.
The Animals did not want Mr. Jones to come back so they had to be disciplined. “If Comrade Napoleon says it, it must be right.†“Napoleon is always right.†“I will work harder.†(Orwell 56) The animals didn’t want Mr. Jones back so they would have to listen and obey everything Napoleon said do.
The pigs are able to change rules around to benefit themselves because they can read and write. For Example: The animals noticed the pigs were breaking the 4th Commandment, which reads “No animal shall sleep in a bed,†but the pigs changed it to “No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets.†(Orwell 67)
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.†The Pigs used that to an advantage throughout the whole book. The pigs were “more equal†because they could read and write.
