- Social Organizations of the interactions within different societies.
- (1) Hunter-Gatherer Societies
o Marriage ? long term alliance, usually permanent (ideal, desired norm) between a man and a woman.
o Established an economic and social unit that enables people to raise children properly.
o You need parents who function adequately.
o Functions of marriage:
? Economic; complementary knowledge. Men have certain skills and provide certain things for their family, same goes for women. They both have different knowledge of things.
? Sexual Bond; husband and wife will have sexual access to each other. Who may have sex with whom? Provide partners for adults, as well as limit partners (in order to have order).
? Sex provides us with kids; they have to be fed, clothed, and housed.
? Family; provides for aid, assurance. Help family members when it is needed.
? Emotional function; become fond of each other, become each other’s allies, become friends that can depend on each other.
? These are universal functions that marriage serves.
o Choices of marriage:
? Need to choose a spouse; what are the criteria.
? Criteria for what we cannot marry.
? Incest taboo ? taboo is a prohibition; in any society you cannot commit incest – can’t have intercourse with or sexual relations with people who are too close to you. Cannot marry children, brothers and sisters, parents, or grandparents; they are too closely related.
? Possibilities of who we choose as spouses depend on practical matters; what kind of skills do they have?
? Useful, competent, economic partner; look at their skills, knowledge, and character.
? Responsible parents try to make sure that their kids marry someone who will be a good hunter (in terms...
