Case Summary
Apple’s hiring process for years has been the typical, send in an application over the web and after enough time if they fell you’re a true Apple addict. If they felt you loved the products they would hire you and teach you everything you needed to know to succeed in the company. Recently they have changed their focus and have started the “black card strategy,†this is where recruiters for Apple visit other retail stores and give workers that they feel did an excellent job a card that tells them they did a great job and would like to talk with them about working for Apple. If they are happy they will not ask them to leave but if they are looking for a change they would like to hire them.
Apple is also starting to join with Best Buy to start selling Apple’s as well as the other line of computers but they are making it so that they have their own mini store within the Best Buy to help customers feel like they are in an Apple store.
1.1 Is there something unethical about Apple’s “black card strategy,†or does it merely represent good, hard-nose business?
Some people may look at this a just good business by finding the people that are providing good customer service and giving them the opportunity to take a look at going to work for Apple. This usually falls into a gray area. While you want to find the best possible workers for your business you also don’t want to blatantly steel workers from competitors and it will give your company a bad reputation. But in business there are many recruiting companies that are hired by all sorts of companies to find well qualified works to fill positions. The only difference is that Apple is just sending their own recruits without paying an outside firm to do it for them. This way they know that people that come in to interview that have been given a black card have already been evaluated by another Apple employee that fells they will be a good asset to the...
