Argumentative Essay on Marihuana

Nowadays Marijuana has become a very common and controversial issue. There are many studies trying to prove benefits and damages of this substance. Several researches on marijuana’s statistics, its biochemical effect and its legal prohibition as a way to avoid the contact with other narcotics have exposed that the frequency use of this drug is associated with the later intake of harder ones. Nevertheless the use of marijuana does not lead to consumption of more dangerous drugs.

While it is true that users of this narcotic are statistically correlated with the likelihood of becoming addicted to more dangerous drugs, it would be fallacious to make statistical correlation a fact since the statistics correlations between previous marijuana intake and the beginning of new drugs use may be only an incidental feature. There are many statistical associations that are by no means causally related. For instance, numerous statistic studies have pointed out that people who drink coffee are more likely to use dangerous drugs than those who do not consume it. But is this a sign of a causal relationship between drinking coffee and using drugs? Similarly one observer has shown a statistic connection between tomato juice and becoming intoxicated. Needless to say, tomato juice has no intoxicating properties whatsoever, but it is often mixed with vodka to make drinks such as “Bloody Marys” producing an accidental connection between the ingestion of tomato juice and intoxication. There is a book called “How to lie with Statistics”   that illustrates many of such factual and methodological errors in reasoning, both intentional and unintentional associated with the interpretation of statistics that lead to inaccurate conclusions. We should be careful not to make similar mistakes while trying to link marijuana and later use of dangerous drugs. It would be groundless to translate statistic correlation into a causal process.

Not only there are some contradictory explanations...
