Finding Art in Tacloban

Art, as have been defined by Encarta dictionary, is a beautiful or thought-provoking work produced through creative activity.1 It is a creation by human endeavor rather than by nature.2 As have been told to us by our humanities professor, art is an expression of oneself wherein I strongly agree and have no doubt about it. I believe that every one of us have the capability to make a piece we can call as an art in our own perceptions. Art is not just about the general public’s view on a certain piece of art but most importantly, the main point of an art’s existence is due to the person behind the artwork, most specifically how the person expressed his feelings and emotions that crafted the artwork.

Talking about art, an assignment has been given to us by our humanities professor and our class was to find and discover what art is here in Tacloban. In my what-is-art-in-Tacloban hunt, I’ve encountered a number of pieces that have caught my attention. There were stunning structures, paintings, and even living entities, but then one particular work of art interested me so much (I regarded the piece an art the very first time I saw it). I found this piece in a famous ecclesiastical structure here in Tacloban. Though it is only a portion of the whole edifice, its detailed facet impressed me a lot that at first glance I was so sure it was the one I’ve been seeking for. It was as if an eccentric feeling jolted out of an oubliette. With my camera on hand, I took its picture and shortly after, I started thinking of beautiful things. I think it was the kind of feeling that artists would feel after a successful outreach of their emotions and the kind that usually results to a majestically crafted art piece. Though I was not the one who created the piece, the dexterity in the piece oozing in confidence soothes through my skin. Its aesthetic value is of high regard...
