In this paper I am going to try and explain the culture of tattoos and body piercing. The art of both tattooing and piercing is a form of a body modification, and I feel that everyone should know the culture behind it and why, where, and when they came along. I think that people will understand why people get them if they knew the meaning that the cultures had for them. They found tattoos and piercings to be a way to perform a ritual to please the gods. Tattoos and piercings have been around for many years, the culture behind them is worth knowing. People got them to show bravery and strength.
Tattoos have been around for over 5000 years. They are really diverse just like the people would decide to wear them on their body. They started out in the Bronze Age, when they discovered a body with all these tattoos on it. Scientist found the body during a dig that they did and they thought because of the location and the position of the tattoos on the well preserved body, they were said to be a sign of treatment for arthritis. The tattoos were of skin bears, a cross, and straight lines and dots (Designboom, 2010). They were said to be a way to help deal with the pain since there was no actual treatment back then. People had to find any way they could to deal with the pain that they were going through. They really didn’t have any real doctors back then so they had to do what they needed to do to get by every day and not be in so much pain.
Tattoos moved across the country starting in the 1891, they move to places like Egypt, Japan, and China. They found it as a way to show their pride in their country and what they were doing in their life. In China and Japan they saw it as a sign of pride and bravery for those who wore them.
