Australia’s population ticked over 22 million in September last year, but our previous Prime Minister Kevin Rudd resisted calls to wind back overseas migration.
The Australian bureau of Statistics released information stating that the population reached 22,066, 000 on September 30, 2009. This was an increase of 451, 900 people during the year, keeping the growth rate high at 2.1 percent – which is higher than China, the US, Canada, Indonesia and most other nations.
The majority of the growth, 66 per cent, was due to overseas migration, with the remainder, 34 per cent, due to natural increase, or the excess of births over deaths.
Australia’s population increase is going to cause too many difficulties on Australia’s water resources, put a strain on our cities to adequately accommodate the influx of people, create problems surrounding the infrastructure and the transport services, and if it’s not already a mess the increase in population will cause more problems within the health system, not been able to house the amount patients, and finally the population boost as it has been suggested will increase the amount of crime and social dislocation.

Our former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd said ‘I actually believe in a big Australia. I make no apology for that. I actually think its good news that our population is growing.’ But our current Prime Minister Julia Gillard said I don’t support the idea of a big Australia with arbitrary targets of, say, a 40 million-strong Australia or a 36 million-strong Australia. We need to stop, take a breath and develop policies for a sustainable Australia’ I also support the motion ‘Sustainable Australia’ not a ‘Big Australia’.
