Before the creation of the automobile, traveling was done by horses, streetcars, railways, bicycles, and by foot. With these modes of travel people generally stayed centralized to their home city or towns because of the time and unreliability of traveling. The horses required a lot of care and rest, also causing sanitation problems in the cities with their manure left on the streets. With the automobile, regular traveling became more convenient and affordable, especially in areas without railways. People were able to travel further than before because cars did not require rest like horses allowing them to get to there destinations faster. The creation of the automobile changed the way people live in society; leading to great benefit, but also have left disastrous effects on the environment and the health of people. With almost every family having a car in the United States, not many people know where the car came from and the changes manufactures have taken to adapt to societies needs.
Many people give credit to Henry Ford for inventing the car, but the vehicles that can be considered automobiles have been around centuries. Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot is often credited for building the first self propelled vehicle in 1769, but many dispute whether or not his car ever ran. While others claim Ferdinand Verbiest built the first vehicle in 1672, but there is no evidence of his car. Henry Ford however, was credited with the developing the first automobile intended for the mass market, which is why he is credited for inventing the automobile. (Cowan 228)
