Barriers In Diversity

Nationality can become a potential barrier in health communication because people have different beliefs that either come from their homeland, or just their culture. For example there are some people that have different feelings about getting their children vaccinated, and they run into a lot of problems when they try to put their children in school. Another communication problems that could happen with nationality is language. Since in the United States there are people that talk different languages, and not everyone speaks the same language. So the people that do not speak or understand English can face problems communicating.
Lifestyle is another potential barrier in health communication. This is a problem because there are some people that do not want to change the way they are living to improve themselves. There is only so much that a provider can tell a patient about living their lives, so for example a person that has asthma but is a smoker, the provider can suggest that the patient quit smoking, but the provider can not make them quit.
Health can cause a potential barrier in health communication because some people are afraid to talk about their illnesses. It is important that the provider make the patient feel as comfortable as possible, so that the patients are not afraid to talk about anything. For example, the provider should make the patient comfortable enough that the patient can come in and tell the provider that they think that they may have an STD.
Educational status can cause a potential barrier in health communication because the patient may not understand everything that the doctor is saying, the doctor must make sure that they aren’t using real bid words, but if they do they need to make sure that they explain what it means. Patients may feel stupid about asking a question so if everything is explained than the patient won’t have to feel that way.
