Being an excellent bartender is much more than a job it is a skilled profession. Good bartending used to be and still is about speed and skill, but really takes much more than that. A few of the key qualities of an outstanding bartender would include attention, knowledge, and order.
The usual? Although a curveball might be thrown from time to time, remembering what a person drinks is very important since we all are creatures of habit when it comes to our taste buds. Never hesitate! A good bartender would never give the customer a chance to ask for another drink; instead he/she would have noticed that the customers drink is at its last swallow and would start pouring or opening the next one. Beverages with labels will always be served with the label directly facing the customer. A good bartender will be the first to offer a light when he/she sees a customer reaching for their pack of cigarettes.
Know your surroundings! Like any other job out there, knowledge of you environment is expected. The best bartenders will be able to answer any bar related question as well as a few that doesn’t apply to the bar. How much does that cost, do you carry this product, can you make that drink, what tastes good, who won the football game, how do I get to this location, what is there to do in this town that is fun, these are just a few of the questions a good bartender should be able to answer. Besides knowing the product that is carried, good bartenders will know the difference in taste for beers, liquors, and wines so he/she can assist customers with choosing the product they would like. All drinks should be served in or with the proper glassware intended.
The looks of a bar and behind a bar reflect a lot about the bartender’s personality. Everything in the customers’ eyeshot should look perfect like it was meant to be. All visible liquor bottles should be organized with their labels facing forward so they are readable to the customer. Even if not...
