Beauty
What is beauty? To someone, waking up in the morning and watching a sunrise that is beauty. To another, watching a tear trickling down someone’s face is just purely beautiful. Indeed God’s creation is beautiful. Looking at beauty as it relates to humans, I personally think that the beauty of a person might include the person’s character, spiritual quality, intelligence, and morals. In the bible we read that: “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting but a woman of character is to be praised”. However, in today’s society the emphasis is more on how the person looks, how slim they are and how attractive they are.
The Ancient Greeks first introduced the definition of beauty as something that produces pleasant sensations. In those days the keyword to beauty was proportion. Proportions that are very different today. Looking at the renaissance paintings, the voluptuous women that were portrayed were considered symbols of beauty. In today’s society the tall thinness of models are considered the epitome of beauty. We are bombarded everyday with beauty contests like “Miss Universe” and shows like “Extreme Makeover”, as well as “People Magazine” featuring the most beautiful people in the world, all trying to answer the question "What is beauty?".
When the bible talks about “beauty is fleeting but a woman of character is to be praised”, we are looking at the picture of someone who is honored because of inner qualities: kindness, meekness, a hardworking woman, a woman with high morals. Someone with a beautiful spirit will radiate beauty. It is in the kindness that is reflected in her eyes, the genuineness of her smile, the wisdom that is on her tongue. We find out however that most people will choose someone outwardly beautiful over character. Marriages fail because men choose beauty over character. Managers hire people just because they found them beautiful. Have our values changed? Are people who are beauty challenged somehow out of favor?
