“Beethoven meets Lenny Kravitzâ€
As a musician, I have thoroughly enjoyed researching Daniel Bernard Roumain and his awe inspiring diversity of music. His violin playing is remarkable in the way he uses it in so many different styles. In one interview he said he liked, among many things, to play the higher notes on the neck of his violin. This will make a higher pitch when played but a common downside is it may not be as clear of a note or it may come off with a sort of “twang.†It is also harder to play higher on the neck with a fretless violin. There are no fret markers and the notes become closer together as you go higher on the neck. The slightest change in your finger position can change the note completely, but Roumain manages to stay on key and produce a very clear sound while playing during one of his interviews.
Roumain stated in a few of his interviews that he is inspired by all types of musical genres. My title, “Beethoven meets Lenny Kravitz,†taken from his website, describes his musical diversity perfectly. He says his roots are mainly from hip-hop and classical. He also likes to incorporate jazz, electronica, and even improvisational style music. He is also a composer and a writer for a few different string ensembles, and is capable of directing a full orchestra. After listening to him, almost everyone would agree that he is an amazing violinist, but what I find most interesting about him is that he not only loves all types of music, but incorporates them all into his own original pieces.
Roumain’s style of using many different genres and putting them together the way he wants is a characteristic of postmodernism. Postmodernism relies on the individuals’ ability to focus on the relative truths of themselves.
