Assignment Defenses
      Your defense mechanisms work by your id, ego, and superego working together harmoniously by the ego satisfying the demands of the id in a manner that is reasonable and moral with the superego approving. However this is the ideal way of your defense mechanisms to work. According to Morris and Albert (2005), “when the ego is unable to control impulses from the id in a way that is acceptable to the superego, it experiences anxiety, manifested as intense feelings of uneasiness, apprehension, or worry” (p. 420). According to Morris and Albert (2005), “To reduce the discomfort caused by the anxiety, the ego may resort to using a variety of defense mechanisms to keep the unacceptable impulses of the id from reaching consciousness” (p. 420). There are nine different defense mechanisms they are denial, repression, projection, identification, regression, intellectualization, reaction formation, displacement, and sublimation. I am going to give a definition and an example of three of the nine defense mechanisms. The defense mechanism denial is when one refuses to acknowledge something that is painful or something that is threatening to reality. An example of the defense mechanism denial is someone who is an alcoholic but they refuse to see that they are or admit that they are an alcoholic because they seem to function rather well in their daily lives. The defense mechanism regression is someone who regresses back to an earlier point in their childhood for one reason or another. An example of the defense mechanism regression is having a child that is potty trained and there is a new sibling born and brought home into the family and the child who is potty trained gets jealous and starts having accidents wetting their pants so they are regressing back to an earlier stage in their childhood.   The defense mechanism acting out is when someone uses extreme behavior to show how...
