Being single in contemporary world – curse or blessing
Today's singles are richly diversified. Some of them have chosen a life of loneliness, some believe singlehood is a beneficial approach to life. Nevertheless, for large majority of single people, it is only to last for a short-term. Contemporary world is couples’ world where singles may feel discriminated as media constantly promote couplehood. Since singles constitute one of the largest but least understood minority groups, they oppose society's pressures and misconceptions of togetherness. They would rather be alone than be driven to get unhappily married and eventually end up divorced or depressed. Singles are world-widely stereotyped, stigmatized by the society, and ignored in media. Therefore living the single lifestyle, free and independent as it may seem at first, is in fact a life of fight with fallacies, and a true curse in the dawn of the new millennium.
Singles are often portrayed as socially inept recluses isolated from the society, lacking friends and family, hating their jobs and life in general. Or, especially in the case of men are seen as bar flies, squandering money, buying peculiar gifts for themselves to make up for the loss of self-confidence. Either way, singles lack a positive image. Due to that, they may often perceive themselves through such judgments and therefore have lower self- esteem. Some believe that singles are uniformly lonely and miserable. This notion is a hard dying myth, since many singles live lives of contentment. They no longer begrudgingly admit that there’s a man-shaped hole in their life, but reshape their state into a time of self-enjoyment. Yet all they experience every day is that they will not have a happy life unless they are married. It is demanding of single people to endlessly prove to others that they are pleased with their lives. It is not even a part of our cultural imagination that you could embrace being single and want to be single....
