“The Benefits of Legalizing Marijuanaâ€
Decriminalizing marijuana has been a controversial subject for many years. Many believe that this plant could benefit society and also help with people that are terminally ill. Alcohol and tobacco are widely used, more dangerous, and legal. Isn’t it our personal freedom and right to choose what harms our body and what doesn’t? Generally, this plant isn’t more harmful than those drugs. Most doctors agree that its not harmful if used in moderation. Unlike cigarettes and alcohol, this plant has many other resources that can benefit society.
Currently, the government claims the right to, and does, criminalize the growing, selling and possession of marijuana. Many states are voting in 2010 to reduce the consequences if caught with this drug. California has legalized this drug for medicinal usage and many other states are considering this option. Massachusetts has reduced the consequences if caught with marijuana. A person may have one ounce of marijuana on them and not receive any jail time.
If legalized in the United States, this plant can benefit the government and society. With the current economic woes, and influx of taxable revenue from a legalized marijuana and hemp industry, could very well prevent states like California, from going bankrupt. The government brings in major revenue from taxing alcohol and cigarettes. If legalized the United States could tax marijuana and provide the government with a new source of revenue. Since legalization in California, marijuana has become one of America’s top selling agricultural products.

This increase of revenue and development of a new industry would open up job opportunities for the unemployed across America.
