Chapter 10-1: The Male Reproductive System

The ultimate function of the male system is to produce sperm cells. The sperm cells are then delivered to the female reproductive system where they will fertilize the females eggs. This general process is how the male gets his portion of genetic material to the uterus, where the egg is developed for nine months. The major organs of the male reproductive system are the two testes. The two testes are where the sperm cells are produced. Surrounding these testes is the epididymis. The epididymis is made of tightly coiled tubules where, while the cell matures, sperm is stored. Arising from the epididymis is a long tube that guides sperm cells outside of the body. This tube is called a vas deferens. The vas deferens passes the urinary bladder. The vas deferens then meets the duct that leads from the seminal vesicle and forms the ejaculatory duct. The ejaculatory duct joins the urethra from the urinary bladder.   The urethra is a long tube that runs alongside the prostate gland and then enters the penis. One important feature of the penis is the prepuce. The penis is suspended from the muscle by a suspensory ligament. The sac hangs from the root of the penis and is called the scrotum. The point where the urethra enters the body is called the pubis.

Chapter 10-2: The Female Reproductive System

The female reproductive system produces sex cells that fuse with the male cells. The process by which they fuse is called fertilization. The female system is responsible for nurturing and developing the embryo/fetus for nine months. The ovaries are female reproductive organs in which egg cells are formed and they are also the site of the production of the female sex hormones. The egg cell travels from the ovaries into the Fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes lead the egg cell to the uterus. The uterus is a muscular organ that stretches to hold the fetus until its birth. The uterus can be found just above the urinary bladder. The...
